As the cleanest burning fuel available today, natural gas is the perfect choice for operating forklifts. It offers a number of benefits over the other types of commercial and industrial forklifts – propane, gasoline, diesel and electric.

No yard tank storage or loss of indoor space: Natural gas forklifts use a compressed gas system for refilling a permanently mounted tank. Refueling takes place onsite at a natural gas station, so there’s no loss of indoor floor space as there is with an electric forklift battery recharging area. Natural gas also eliminates the need to have a propane tank storage area on the property, plus there’s no concern about running out of propane tanks before the next scheduled tank delivery. Gasoline and diesel are more expensive and, of course, does not meet new CARB rules banning their use.

Refueling a natural gas forklift takes only minutes: It saves time and eliminates the possibility of physical injuries from changing out a tank. The forklift operator simply refuels at any time at a natural gas station, without the worry of wondering if the tank is nearing empty.

Improved indoor air quality: The carbon monoxide emissions of natural gas forklifts are up to 95 percent lower than propane forklifts, reducing potential headaches that may be experienced by workers who are exposed to exhaust fumes.

Lower maintenance costs: Natural gas also helps engines operate more efficiently, lowering maintenance costs.

Lower operating costs: In most cases, natural gas is 1/2 the cost of propane, gasoline or electricity.

Natural Gas Is Better than Electric:

No Battery Charging Requirements: Electric forklifts are powered by large, heavy lead-acid batteries. A single battery typically provides enough power for one standard eight-hour shift. A company with a two or three-shift operation would need to re-charge the batteries daily and hence would have to buy extra batteries to ensure that every shift has a fully-charged battery on hand. Electric batteries also lose the ability to fully charge as they age and suffer performance losses as a result. With natural gas forklifts, the natural gas cylinder is permanently mounted on the forklift. There is no battery or charging requirements and refuelling is as easy as filling your car with gasoline.

More Valuable Space: Natural gas forklifts require no batteries to be recharged, maintained or replaced, hence no internal floor space is required for recharging stations. Most natural gas refuelling stations are located outdoors, freeing up indoor room for valuable production or warehousing space. Battery recharging stations need a large area that, by law, must be located in a dry, ventilated and temperature-controlled location.
